Ultimate guide to family FUN with KIDS in Melbourne - Life with the Lamsays

Thinking of taking a trip to the city these school holidays? Not sure where to go? Check out some of the epic places we’ve been to on our many trips to Melbourne over the last year and a bit. You’re sure to find something to keep the kids entertained here, and with train tickets nice & cheap - let’s go!

For the little ones:

It’s always good to have a couple of spots where the babies of the family can have fun too up your sleeve. It’s a good opportunity for the grown ups to have a bit of a rest & reset too! Here’s our picks:

• Museum of Play & Art (MOPA)
These wonderful museums are perfect for 0-5 year olds. There's plenty of open space to run around, and the sessions go for 2 hours. There's two MoPA's currently (Geelong & Sandringham) with another opening in Thomastown soon.

Landing Playspace, Bundoora
This soft play centre is great for the little ones to burn off energy, and with a cafe too, you can't go wrong. It's a nice bright open space, with a kids kitchen filled with play kitchen utensils and food - perfect for little ones learning to use their imagination. There’s another LP centre opening soon, I’m just not sure where yet - update to come!

We loved visiting this animal farm. There's plenty of animals to pet, as well as a nice cafe on site, and an awesome playground that's farm themed. Hunter loved playing here, and we definitely need to visit again now he's a bit older.

Collingwood Children’s Farm, Abbortsford (lots of fun, cafe nearby)
This animal farm was also a winner with a cafe nearby. They actually have an all-day school holiday program where kids get outdoors, make friends and learn life-long farming and sustainability skills. Perfect for 8-14 year olds (check their website for more details).

For everyone:
These are attractions that the whole family will enjoy, so you can entertain everyone in the one spot, with little to no whinging hopefully!

• Melbourne Museum & Children’s Gallery (something for the whole family, lots of fun!) Whether you have dinosaur lovers in the house, or your little ones just want to explore the children's section - there's something for everyone here!

• Melbourne Zoo (another one that the whole family will love, great for all ages!) Not only will walking around this amazing zoo tire everyone out, there's so many different animals to see, with a great food court for when you need to refuel.

• Sea Life Aquarium (perfect if you have aquatic animal lovers in the family) We haven't checked this out with Hunter yet, but we're so keen to do it very soon, as we have a big sea creature lover!

• Fitzroy Gardens (beautiful walk with a cool little play section for the kids) We all really enjoyed this relaxing walk, and the play area was a huge hit with a lot of the kids there.

• National Gallery of Victoria (different exhibits on with FREE entry) An amazing gallery with different things on all of the time. Make sure you check out their website for the latest exhibits.

• CERES Community Environment Park (nice and relaxing with an awesome play area for little adventurers) Hunter really loved exploring this epic space, and the play area was something very different - even Auntie and Uncle got in on the action.

• Brighton Beach (on a nice sunny day, who doesn’t love the beach?)
Not as much fun on a windy day, but it's nice to walk along the beach checking out all of the different coloured huts.

Parks/Playgrounds:
When in Melbourne, you’re sure to find an awesome playground nearby. If the kids are needing to burn off some steam, here’s a few of our favourites (depending on where you are):

Hopefully this guide has given you a few places to go to make the most of your time in the big smoke. We certainly have heaps of fun whilst we’re there.

Until next time!
