Ultimate Free & Low-Cost Things to do with Kids guide in & around Albury Wodonga - Life with the Lamsays

Looking for budget-friendly family adventures? You don't need to break the bank to keep everyone entertained. The Albury Wodonga region and surrounding areas offer plenty of free and low-cost activities that the whole family can enjoy. Whether you're a newbie to the area, or you've been here a while and you're just not sure what to do, hopefully this guide is helpful to you.

So let's get out and make some memories, without worrying about how much we're spending! Please note, some of the links are to other blog posts on our website, and others are resources from other sites such as the Visit Albury Wodonga website, or the websites of the places mentioned. This is so that even if we haven't visited them yet, you can still read a bit more prior to going to know what it's about or what to expect.

Museums & Galleries

As well as the exhibits in the local libraries, which we explore fairly frequently, you might want to have a look at these gems too. Depending on your families interests, hopefully you'll find one of these takes your fancy!

Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA has a nice little kids gallery)
Holbrook Submarine Museum (Greater Hume region but still very interesting)

Local Artwork

If you're an art lover who prefers to be outdoors, make sure you check these out next time you get the itch! You get to get some steps in, whilst admiring some beautiful artwork - what more could you want?

Animals & Nature

Who doesn't love animals and getting out in nature? Have you visited these wonderful places with your family yet? Feed the animals, or just enjoy the peace and quiet of the botanic gardens on the NSW side of the border.

Albury Botanic Gardens (Children’s garden)
Wagga Zoo in the Botanic Gardens

Parks & Exercise

We have so many parks, bike & walking trails, and places to burn off some steam here on the border - you'll always have somewhere new to get your daily steps in. If the kids are in need of burning some of that energy, the local skate parks and pump tracks are a perfect way to do that!

50+ playgrounds including Sumsion Gardens (Wodonga) & Oddies Creek (Albury)
Bike trails
Walking & Hiking - Discover Wonga Wetlands

Aquatic Playgrounds

Fancy a swim? If it's warm, there's a few outdoor options locally, and if you're in the cooler months and it's chilly, Wodonga Lesiure Centre is nice and warm! The splash parks are really popular with the kids, and the grown ups can relax by the side, or hop in for a few laps - love it!

Local Libraries

There's Story time sessions for kids at all 3 of our local librariesWodonga, Albury & Lavington. This is a really good way of introducing kids to books, whilst also getting them, and you, out of the house and socialising with other kids/parents. Each library also has a variation of things to entertain the kids - an interactive floor, large building blocks, puzzles etc.

Borrow from the Toy Library in Wodonga

This is great way to introduce your little ones to new toys that they may not have access to normally. Also brilliant if you're short on space in your house or garden for larger toys, you can borrow one, then bring it back and swap it for another one. You pay a small membership fee, and can swap toys as you please. They’re open Saturday’s 9am-12pm and Tuesday’s 12.30pm-2.30pm!

Trains

Have you checked out the Wodonga Creek Minature Railway before? Trains run every 3rd Sunday from February to December.  There are no trains running in January. Tickets are $3.00 each, and the trains run 11am to 3.15pm.

Plane spotting at Albury airport

The perfect activity for aviation lovers (old and young), and you can stop in at McDonald’s for food & a play afterwards - their PlayPlace is epic!

Kids eat Free

Go out for a meal where kids eat FREE (see our guide). Plenty of the local pubs offer kids eat free/half price nights, making it a cheaper way to take the whole crew out for a feed. There are quite a few with kids play areas too, check those out here.

Ice cream break

We LOVE going to grab a cone on a hot day, and we've found a few great spots to get one:
Topolino Gelateria, Wodonga
Monumental Ice Creamery Albury or Thurgoona

We really hope that you've found this guide helpful, and enjoy exploring our wonderful region. There really is so much to do in Albury Wodonga and the surrounding areas, and we really love getting feedback from our wonderful readers - both online, and in person! Thank you so much for continuing to read our write ups. A lot of time and effort goes into them, and aside from the collaborations we've organised (which are paid in services, product etc) we don't get paid to do any of this. So thank you again, until next time!
