Places to take your little ones on a budget

We all went through a pandemic that put the world at a standstill. You couldn’t go anywhere, or do anything, and even when it was “over”, you still didn’t want to travel too far afield in fear of catching the virus.

Now that it’s almost a thing of the past, all we want to do is get out there and explore! These Covid babies are now Covid toddlers. They’re crazy, and they just want to see the world.

We live in a rural city, right next to another rural city. And whilst we may not have quite as many things to see or do, compared to places like Melbourne or Sydney, there are some things you can do with your littles that don’t cost much. Some don’t even cost anything at all, and you’re getting your doses of Vitamin D and Serotonin - bonus!

A place that our Hunter loves visiting is the Children’s Garden in the Albury Botanical Gardens - it’s also commonly referred to as the dinosaur park!

There’s musical instruments, a play area with a sandpit, and statues of dinosaurs, which are always awesome because who doesn’t love dinosaurs?! It’s closed on Wednesday’s for maintenance, unless it’s the school holidays - and it’s within walking distance to the Oddies Creek park I mentioned in my previous post. We basically just follow Hunter around at a distance and let him do his thing!

The second place that we really love taking Hunter to is the Red Stag Deer & Emu Farm in Eurobin, Victoria. It’s just over an hour’s drive away - but you can buy a bucket of feed for $5 and away the kids go, feeding all of the beautiful animals they have there. Or if you’re like Hunter, you flutter your eyelashes in the hope that other people’s parents give you some feed as soon as you jump out of the car - it worked!

They have deer, emus, goats, chickens & alpacas! Hunter loved feeding the emu because it kept pecking its head in the bucket. And next to where the baby goats are, there’s a slide which is always a win!

They also have a restaurant out there, or you can just grab an ice cream from the gift shop and enjoy it outside like we did last time we went. It’s always a nice day out, and we took my grandparents there a few years ago when they visited from Scotland too (before Hunter was born)!

The last place I want to mention, which is a couple of hours of driving both ways (so not exactly close by) is the Wagga Zoo & Aviary. Although it’s a fair way from Albury-Wodonga, it ties in nicely with our number one playground, as they’re in the same city - and I just really thought that it deserved a mention!

We saw a large variety of birds there (Hunter loved chasing a peacock around), there were also dingos, ducks, pigs, turkeys and a big goat. Although we packed the pram, and it was super hot, our stubborn little man was determined to walk around himself. It’s free entry for this one too, and there’s also little cafe that sells ice cream there, as well as a couple of playgrounds - our fave!

Hopefully this post has given you a few ideas of things you can do with your little people if you’re on a budget. Or if you just want to get out of town and do something, as well as watching your kids run a muck at the park!

Until next time!
