Whippin’ up a Storm Roadside Bakery, Howlong NSW - Life with the Lamsays

We took a drive out to Howlong this morning to check out the roadside bakery, Whippin’ up a Storm. It’s been on our to do list for a while, so now we’re feeling better after the flu wiped us out, today was the day.

We got there just before 10am, and there were already 10 people in line ready and waiting. If you arrive a fair bit before 10, you take a number and wait in your car whilst everything is set up.

When it’s your turn, you have a look and grab what you want to buy, and either pay by cash, or use the QR code and add what you’ve picked up to your basket and buy it on your phone. It’s simple, however if you get stuck, Stormie is usually chatting to everyone outside and she can help you out. A lot of the money made from sales goes back into buying ingredients for the following week, so it’s important you pop the correct items into your basket & pay for what you grab!

There was so much choice: sourdough, foccacia, brownies, cakes, cookies, jam, spread and more. I grabbed two focaccia loaves - a garlic and a sea salt, a triple chocolate brownie, a slice of carrot cake, and salted choc caramel NYC cookie for us to try. We all tried some of the brownie on the way home, and it was so good, then we sliced up some focaccia for lunch and it’s nice and thick & tastes delicious!

If you follow along on Instagram too (@whippin_up_a_storm) you can see how much time, effort, and love that goes into making this cute roadside bakery happen every Sunday. There are so many people that line up and wait to grab these delicious baked goodies, and this local business has also had an article published in The Border Mail.

  1. We visited here the other week and were very disappointed! The cookies were ok but we really came for the bread. It seemed stale…definitely hadn’t been baked fresh that morning.

  2. That’s a shame that you feel that way.. if you check out their Instagram story each week though, you can see it being prepped the day before and baked early that morning, so it’s definitely fresh!

    1. Yeah I agree it does look that way in her stories but it definitely wasn’t a fresh loaf unfortunately. I guess that might be the reality of selling 50 loaves out of home? Some must be baked the day before at least due to time constraints. I haven’t seen her mention her getting up at 2am or anything like other bakers do.

  3. Yes this is my experience too! I’ve been a few times now thinking it might have been a once off , but It is 100% not fresh bread. It is day old bread. Which, I think probably needs to be stated.

  4. Ah yes, if you look at their stories today, you can see that the bread has been baked today or even yesterday. A lot of people obviously don't mind that it is a couple of days old; I just think it is unusual to sell old bread for that price, even the bread at Woolies is baked on the day.

  5. Local to Howlong here, fact checking you all - the bread is most certainly cooked on the morning of sale! Generously, the local bakery has given her access to the ovens on a Sunday morning as they are not operating on that day, so she has access to industrial sized kitchen and ovens. Perhaps you don’t know what sourdough should taste and feel like.
Poppy, I think if you’re going to do a shout out to a business you need to do and be better at monitoring the comments and facts for those you’re exposing to crap rumours like this and misinformation.

    1. Then why can you see the bakery operating in the background of the videos ? Weird hill to die on I know, but I’ve been baking sourdough for many years and I know what is fresh and what is stale. The bread I bought on both occasions from the roadside bakery was not made on the day. That is a fact…

  6. Yeah sorry, it’s not fresh.
If the bread was fresh it would still be warm at 10am.
Our loaf was stone cold…and stale.
Like I said no problem selling day old bread if that’s how you advertise it. But publishing previously recorded videos on the morning of…it’s misleading.
