Read 1000 Books before School - Life with the Lamsays

We took another trip to one of Hunter’s favourite places today, the library. We got out another few books to read, and on our way out, we joined the Read 1000 Books before School challenge. With 3 year old Kindergarten fast approaching we thought we’ll try and complete it before Hunter starts big school! We still have a couple of years, so there’s plenty of time, but so far, we have 25 books on our list, here’s a few of our favourites if you’re after some recommendations to start you off:

My Body My Rules by Niki Esler Gill
The Very First You by Scott Stuart
Who Took My Nuts? by Tommy Little

We’ve read books about different kinds of families, body autonomy, books about being brave, as well as fun story books in general with fun characters on crazy adventures. One of Hunter’s absolute favourites is ‘Harriet’s Hungry Worms’ by Samantha Smith, and he remembers a lot of the things worms can and can’t have to eat, which is really cool! It’s amazing how much information kids can soak in just from us reading to them.

The aim of this challenge is to encourage children to enjoy reading, whilst expanding their vocabulary as much as possible before starting school. Hunter loves to read, and now that he can talk, he just doesn’t stop! We read a book to him each night, and if he has a nap at home, we read one before that too!

If you would like to take part in this challenge with your little ones, head to your local library and they should be able to either get you on to the challenge too, or at least steer you in the right direction. We’ll post updates over on our Facebook page - so make sure you’re following us over there if you aren’t already. Happy reading everyone!

 Until next time!
